We were approached by the client to solve two common problems, how to tastefully add onto an old bungalow and how to turn a single family home into a multi-generational home.
One of the clients’ parents is moving in with them prompting the need for a renovation as the other two bedrooms in the house are occupied by the clients’ children.
The old two-bedroom bungalow was previously renovated, converting the garage into a semi-functional master bedroom. The only bathroom on the ground floor was added during this previous renovation and is split over three elongated steps down to the garage. This bathroom also doubles as the corridor to the master bedroom meaning that if the bathroom is occupied, the bedroom is literally locked off from the rest of the house!
The clients and their kids love their triangular backyard and use it all the time. We therefor chose to build upwards rather than reduce yard space.
Playing off the original house design, we have literally stacked one bungalow on another.
We mimicked some of the language of the original house while being more playful with the cladding color and shape and more considerate with window sizes.
The two kids’ bedrooms and bathroom on the ground floor will become the dad’s accessible bedroom, study and bathroom.
The second floor is divided into a kids’ wing and a grown up wing with a large atrium in the middle opening onto the ground floor living room. The kids now get much larger bedrooms than they had on the ground floor and will have their own shared balcony opening onto the front of the house.
We included a little nook in the kitchen where the kids can play while the parents are cooking. It doubles as a nook for the dog as well. The nook’s shape is a scaled down outline of the house itself.
